About the Position

Wallowa County is seeking a qualified and detail-oriented Planning Director to join and lead our Planning Department. This position is responsible for organizing, directing, and administering the programs, activities, policies and procedures of the Planning and Development Department. 


Key Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes, supervises and participates in development and implementation of department goals, work programs, policies and procedures.
  • Provides final review, interpretation and decision-making, subject to review and approval by the Board of Commissioners, on various land use ordinances, permit applications, and department documents.
  • Directs and participates in preparing and executing the department annual operating budget; prepares estimates of personnel, supplies, equipment, and capital outlay requirements.
  • Directs preparation, reviews and signs meeting agendas, staff reports, legal notices and official correspondence.
  • Attends meetings with the planning commission, Board of Commissioners, local planning advisory committees, realtors and homebuilders associations and other various committees and groups; prepares and presents written and oral reports relating to development permits and land use planning; represents the department before the Oregon Legislature and state agency board and commissions.
  • Responds to and resolves questions, concerns, and complaints regarding departmental activities; trouble-shoots department related problems.
  • Administers federal and state floodplain requirements.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Seven years increasingly responsible management experience at a level equivalent to a senior planner including at least three years of supervisory or lead work experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school in public or business administration, geography, planning, or a related field.
  • Any satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training which ensures ability to perform the work may substitute for any of the above.
  • A master’s degree may substitute for up to one year experience.
  • Valid Oregon Driver’s License and clean driving record.
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain membership in the American Institute of Professional Planners.
